After the snow melts…..
- Once the snow melts, it is always helpful to do some “clean up.” Pick up those twigs, sticks and branches the winter winds have blown down.
- Lightly rake up any left-over leaf piles and debris the melting snow uncovered and aerate your lawn if needed. This will help wake your lawn up by allowing more light to get to the crown of the plant.
- Mid to late April, before soil temperatures reach 55 degrees, is the time to put down a pre-emergent crabgrass control. Be sure to water it in within 24 hours.
- Keep an eye on your lawn in May and June for signs of fungus and signs distress caused by critters who may have “wintered” in (or on) your lawn, like moles and voles.
If you are planning on seeding or re-seeding an area of your lawn this Spring, Flowerland recommends Scotts Step 1 for Seeding in place a traditional Step 1. Scotts Step 1 for Seeding combines a seed starting fertilizer with a special crabgrass preventer that allows grass seeds to germinate. (A traditional Step 1 product usually contains a crabicide that forms a barrier to prevent all seed germination.)
4-Step Lawn Programs
Flowerland carries natural and traditional 4-step lawn programs to keep your lawn in tip-top shape.
Spring Tip: Rake and/or aerate your lawn before putting down your crabicide (usually Step 1 of a 4-Step Lawn Program) and be sure to water it in.
