It’s exotic…it’s colorful…

If you are looking for a new indoor winter flower to try, Flowerland Recommends orchids.  Orchids, with over 20,000 varieties to chose from, have a magical beauty and allure about them. They typically bloom in the winter months and blooms can last from a few weeks to a few months. Despite the reputation of being “difficult,” most orchids aren’t hard to grow if you follow some basic tips. Flowerland has care sheets you can take home with you.

Phalaenopsis is a great orchid variety for growing in the home. Typical home temperatures will work as will a bright window with limited sun.

Orchids prefer a moist but not soggy growing environment. For that reason, orchids are not grown in traditional potting but in a special medium that allows for good air circulation. Flowerland has a couple options from which to choose.

Orchid medium tends to be more "chunky," sometimes resembling small bark chips or humus.

Orchids also need to be fed regularly. Use a balanced fertilizer (like a 20-20-20 fertilizer) monthly or you can fed “weakly, weekly” (diluted to 1/4 strength every time you water). Flowerland carries fertilizers specifically formulated for orchids.

You can feed your orchid monthly at full strength or weekly at 1/4 strength.
